April 22, 2006 – Today the Rotary held the Tempe Town Lake Cardboard Boat Regatta and it was a great event, not sure of the final numbers, but they were expect around 10,000 spectators, participants and Rotarians. All I can say is WOW!
This was Miracle League of Arizona’ first public event and a chance for us to announce our presence in the Valley. Last night (Friday) was the judging of the entries and we showed up with our banner, display board and handed out flyers. We met many of the local Rotary dignitaries and enjoyed the BBQ dinner and the evening as the warm Arizona sun set.
As the day cooled, I was able to pause for a moment and realized how much everyone had dedicated so far to make this event a success; Terry had planned our presence at the event and everyone got behind it right away – Gene coordinated several volunteers and had color copies of the materials made by Marathon Imaging, Ken & Kathleen ordered buttons we sold at the event from CafePress, Cynthia, my roommate and I made the display board, a banner was ordered for the table from Angel Signs. That was what happened (and probably more I’ve not remembered right now) just to get to this day, the day before the Cardboard Boat Regatta.
As I arrived on Saturday, Terry was already setting up the tent / gazebo he had brought, Gene showed up with Patrick (a tall, stout hearted young man that works in his office) and my daughter, Megan came along to provide moral support. Ken & Kathleen showed up soon thereafter and stayed for several of the heats of the boat race and then later in the day, Shannon and Denise came along and provided some much needed relief.
Thank you to everyone for your amazing show of support!! – it’ll all matter as we get through the fundraising portion of our work and field construction gets underway. Overall the day was excellent and we very much look forward to our relationship with Rotary here in the Valley and expect we’ll make some kids very, very happy. The pictures show how the booth looked and how much fun we had. Visit our website for more pics.
All I can say is Wow! – What a day and what a fun time for everyone; keep an eye out for our next event here in the Valley!
Let’s Play Ball!
